More Malongo Wildlife........

The Cabinda region of Angola is home to one of the largest Bat colonies in Africa. They are all over the place here, millions of the bloody things!

These are Fruit Bats (so I've been told), they pretty much hang about on the trees all day and then its party time at night!

This Poisonous Snake was found in amongst the plants at our Greenhouse! Gulp!

The Fire Department (who are also the Snake removal team) with their slippery customer!

Taken from one of the Off shore platforms!

These Pics are coutesy of my boss, Eric Walker! Cheers Eric!

Surf & Turf Theme Night

Surf & turf
View more presentations from Steve Hooper.

We alwasy try and liven up the dining hall for our theme dinners. This time I came up with the idea of displaying a full size surf board! Murthy is responsible for the fantastic display. SURF AND TURF! Knarly man!

The Lobsters are the only thing edible on this display and we had to post a guard at this table to stop the Nationals from nicking them!!

We get access to some really good fruit here, some imported from South Africa and some bought locally.

Malongo Greenhouse

Here are some pictures of our on-site Greenhouse where we grow our own Salad produce (Lettuce, Cucumber, Tomatoes & Peppers). We use around 150Kg of tomatoes, 60Kg Lettuce, 80Kg of Cucumber and around 40-50Kg of fresh Bell Peppers each day here in Malongo. And we send even more than that to the Off-shore platforms each day which is delivered either by Helicopter or Boat.

We have recently changed our production methods at the Greenhouse, where we have started to use a new soil composite and space-saving grow bags. This will almost double our production and improve the quality and size of the items we grow.

We have a dedicated Greenhouse team who focus on providing the Main Kitchen, Salad Bar and Off Shore platforms with good quality produce every singe day. The demand for produce is so high that we do not currently have the capacity to grow more items, and we also have to go careful that we do not grow so much that we take business away from our local suppliers whose business's rely on our need for Fresh Fruit and Vegetables. As the majority of all our customers here are Angolan, they particularly enjoy the local Vegetables that we buy in (such as the Sacafolha shown in an earlier post). We are obliged to use these local suppliers to help the local community and business's so we will always be limited on what we grow ourselves.

Farewell to the Lesser Striped Jessett

Annoyed that no one had poured his beer out for him, Tim tried to work out how to do it for himself.............

The Lesser Striped Jessett has left Malongo! He is off to Soyo to head up a new training school, specially designed to teach new and existing nationals basic culinary skills.

This is a new and exciting venture for Express and for Tim especially. I cant think of anyone who could do a better job . Best of luck mate.

A new addition...........

I’m very happy to introduce my gorgeous new daughter Rose Eileen Hooper who was born on the 29th Feb 2012 (Leap Year!) at the Heath Hospital in Cardiff. Rose weighed in at a healthy 8lb 13oz and like her Mum, is absolutely beautiful.
Rose is part of the reason I have not updated the blog for a few weeks as I had to spend an extended period back in the UK as poor Rose picked up a virus not long after being born and she had to spend over a week back in the hospital.
I’m pleased to say she is completely fine now and is entertaining her big brother Harry!
